THE PRESSURES OF UNSUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Pollution from agriculture remains one of the core pressures on Europe’s waters. A quarter of surface waters currently fail to meet the EU water law's targets as a result of fertiliser, pesticide and sediment pollution from farms. Abstraction for agriculture is also a significant pressure, especially in Mediterranean countries.

So far, Member States have failed to address agricultural pollution effectively, but elements of good practice do exist, in large part thanks to the EU water law being in force.
